Lusaka, Dec 5, : .Zambia has confirmed that the omicron Covid-19 variant is present in the southern African nation. Minister of Health Sylvia Masebo reported that the variant was found in the country’s genome sequencing laboratory in three people who tested positive within the last week, Xinhua news agency reported.
During a press conference, she explained to reporters that the variant was found in two males with a history traveling out of the country and one woman who presented with mild flu-like symptoms in an out-patient at Lusaka’s hospital.She had no previous international travel history.
The minister of health urged people to adhere to preventive measures.
She stated that “the responsibility to contain the Covid-19 virus and prevent further transmission of the related disease begins with the individual” and that it requires concerted efforts from communities and institutions.
Many countries have reported the omicron variant.
As of Friday, Zambia’s cumulative Covid-19 cases stood at 210 294
The total number of deaths and recoveries is 3,667 and 206.454, respectively.
