India finishes campaign in World TT C’ships without any medal

Houston (USA), Nov 28, : .India’s campaign at 2021 World Table Tennis Championships Finals ended in defeat after the mixed doubles and women’s teams lost in the quarterfinals.
Mixed doubles: Tokyo Olympians Manika Btra and Sathiyan Ganasekaran lost to Japan’s Hina Harimoto and Tomokazu Harimoto 1-3 (5-11), 2-11, 11-7 and 9-11).They crashed out in the quarterfinals.

They had previously beaten Wang Manyu of China and Kanak Jha from the USA, as well as the team of Adriana Diaz (Puerto Rica) and Brian Afanador (USA) to reach the quarters.

Manika and Archana Kamath, her women’s doubles partner, also lost to Sarah de Nuette of Luxembourg in the final eight.

Batra and Kamath reached the quarters after beating Nathalie Marchetti in Belgium and Margo Degraef in Belgium, and Georgina Pota and Dora Madarasz in Hungary.

Both the Indian teams were one win away from a podium finish, with the bronze medals being awarded to the semi-finalists who lost at the World Table Tennis Championships.

Notably, India has won just two medals at the World Table Tennis Championships, both at their inaugural edition in 1926.

“End of an amazing run here in Houston which was certain one of my greatest ever world championships so far,” tweeted G Sathiyan.

He was the most successful Indian singles player at this event, reaching round 32 in the men’s event.

“Though it was disappointing not to make it after being agonisingly close at a historic medal, and also for missing out on the chance to break into the top-16 in singles, it was nevertheless a fantastic tournament and there were many lessons to be learned,” he said.
