Ateet S.SharmNew Delhi, November 19th, 2009: Central Asian countries continue to be troubled by the export of extremism from Afghanistan and the increase in drug trafficking after Taliban takeover of Kabul.

As yet another military exercise was launched not far from the Afghan border with Tajk, Dushanbe stepped up the pressure against Taliban, and raised the concern about "worsened security" in Afghanistan at the UN Security Council meeting in New York.

The Permanent Representative of Tajikistan at UN Jonibek Hikmat addressed members of UN Security Council and other Afghanistan neighbouring countries who were invited.He expressed his concern about the current situation in Afghanistan.

Hikmat recalled the messages that were sent to Taliban at meetings in Italy and Turkey.They wanted to create an inclusive government and cut all ties to terrorist organizations.

To ensure fundamental rights for women and children, Hikmat stated that Kabuls new regime has not met any of these requirements.The situation would have greater implications for the region and the world.

He urged the international community not to lose its composure and to apply more pressure to the Taliban in order to make them comply.The world may have changed over the past twenty years, but the Taliban has not."Their medieval mindset made it impossible for womens rights to be respected," Hikmat stated in his statement, stressing that Tajikistan would only support an inclusive government of Afghanistan which ensures the freedoms and fundamental rights of all citizens.He stressed that the humanitarian crisis will worsen during winter, when almost half the Afghan population needs urgent aid.Vassily Nebenzia (Russias permanent representative at the United Nations) expressed hope that the Taliban would keep its word on preventing terrorist and drug-trafficking threats from neighboring countries.As the Afghan economy continues its decline, the threat of terrorist attacks, drug trafficking, and terrorism has increased exponentially.

On Wednesday, a joint exercise between the Special Forces and Drug Control Agencies of the Collective Rapid Response Force of the Collective Security Treat Organization (CSTO), titled Cobalt-2021’ began at Fakhrabad Training Ground in Tajikistan.For the past two decades, the CSTO members have highlighted the danger of drug piracy from Afghanistan.

This three-day event will include Russian military personnel working with their counterparts from Armenia, Belarus and Kazakhstan "The current situation at the Tajikistan border, which has been the southern outpost for the CIS in Central Asia direction, is something that our leaders and military personnel have stressed repeatedly," stated Colonel Yevgeny OKhrimenko (interim commander) of Russias 201st Military Base in Tajikistan.Okhrimenko said that the exercise allowed them to make a secure barrier against terrorist and extremist threats.
