Safety of women is our top priority: Delhi Police chief

New Delhi, Nov 24, : , Rakesh Asthana, Delhi Police Commissioner, stated Wednesday that safety for women in Delhi is his highest priority.
“So far as the crime against women concerns, preventing it is our topmost concern,” the chief of police said at an event at the Indian Women’s Press Corps.

He stated that the Delhi Police has six DCPs, eight ACPs, and nine SHOs.They are all women and have been placed in areas where they anticipate crime against women.

Commissioner Asthana stated that the overall approach is to give proper attention to children and women in distress if they are in distress.

He stated that Delhi Police has a crime against women cell at every station, and a specialized division called SPUWAC (i.e.Special Police Unit for Women and Children.Asthana stated, “This not only helps during investigations but also help in counselling women or children in distress.”

He suggested that the best approach is to pay more attention and to solve problems with a positive outlook.

Asthana, during a crime review meeting instructed all DCPs in districts to review all pending cases of crime against women and ensure that they are filed within the prescribed time.

But what do the numbers tell us? Comparatively to last year’s data, the crime against women in the capital continued to rise.

According to data compiled in Delhi Police, 1,725 women were allegedly raped between October 31 and December 31, 2018.The heinous crime was committed by 1,429 women in 2020.

Comparing the data to the previous year, the increase has been 20%.The total number of crimes against women in 2020 was 7,948, which has increased to 11,527 this year.

In the past 10 months, crime against women has risen by 45 percent in the capital.
