CEC: Women voters registered 235.72% increase since 1971 polls.

New Delhi, Nov 27, : Since 1971, there has been a 235.72 percent increase in female voters.

Their participation has exceeded that for men, to reach more than 67% in the 2019 general elections, according to Chief Election Commissioner of India."India has seen a 235.72 percent increase in female voters since 1971.After seven decades and 17 General Elections, Indias participation has exceeded that of men.It was more than 67% in the 2019 General Election "The gender gap, which was -16.71% in 1962, is now a critical parameter and has been closed but reversed to +0.17 percent in 2019," Sushil Chandra said at an international webinar on Friday on the topic Enhancing electoral participation for Women, Persons With Disabilities (PwDs), which was attended by almost 100 delegates from 24 different countries.Chandra highlighted the ECIs various initiatives to increase women participation.

Chandra stated that there were more women who managed the polling stations, creche facilities at polling stations and separate toilets at the booths.This made it easier for women to register with Block level officers.

She also encouraged women to be part of their socio-cultural environment.Sushil Chandra, a speaker, also spoke out on Absentee, voter facilitation.

It was introduced by ECI in 2020 to provide voting access at the doorstep for seniors and those over 80 years of age.He added, "Such postal vote facility had been successfully implemented across six states Assembly elections including Bihar and Assam, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and UT Puducherry which had a cumulative electorate of 73.6 million." The last five state Assembly elections saw a 4.5-fold increase in participation via postal ballots.There is room for improvement in outreach and facilitation efforts.
