This is despite the fact that Omicron has been detected in South Africa, where it was present, according to the WHO on Sunday.

It is not clear if Omicron causes more severe diseases, but preliminary data suggests that there is an increase in hospitalisations in South Africa due to Omicron, according to Xinhua news agency.

WHO confirmed that Omicron symptoms are not different from other variants. It will take several weeks to understand the severity of Omicron variants.

All Covid-19 variants, including the Delta, can cause severe illness or death, especially for the most vulnerable.Prevention is the key.

WHO stated that there is preliminary evidence suggesting Omicron reinfection, but more information is needed. In the coming days and week, more information will be available.

It was also noted that current PCR tests continue detecting Omicron, and further studies are ongoing to determine how the Omicron variant might impact available vaccines or treatments for Covid-19.

WHO on Friday classified the latest variant B.1.1.529 of SARS/CoV-2 virus, now known as Omicron, as a “Variant of Concern (VOC).

A VOC is defined by WHO as a VOC that has a global public health significance.

It can be characterized by one or more mutational changes, such as an increase in transmissibility, detrimental change in Covid-19 epidemicology, or virulence, or decrease in effectiveness of public and social health measures, or the availability of diagnostics, vaccines, or therapeutics.

WHO has since urged countries that they increase surveillance and sequencing of circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants, submit complete genomic sequences and metadata to a publicly accessible database, and report initial VOC clusters or cases to WHO.

It also recommended laboratory assessments and field investigations to better understand the potential impacts of the VOC upon Covid-19 epidemiology, effectiveness of public health measures, and antibody neutralisation.
