The eruption of Volcano on the Spanish island continues

Madrid, Nov 24, : Scientists have confirmed that the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, on the Spanish island La Palma, is not slowing down and has shown no signs of easingAccording to Xinhua news agency, the volcano has been active for 66 consecutive days, spewing lava, ash, and generating earthquakes.

Spains National Geographic Institute recorded 46 earthquakes between 12 midnight and 7.37 am on Tuesday.The strongest jolts measured 4.8 and 4.7 on Richter scale.Mondays quakes recorded 95, the most since November 17, when more than 300 temblors had been registered.

Monday also saw a fourth flow of lava reach the sea.There is a risk of uncontrolled release of toxic gasses that can result from the hot lava meeting the saltwater of the Atlantic Ocean.Around 3,000 residents were ordered to stay indoors.

Lava covers approximately 1,060 hectares on the island.More than 2,500 buildings were destroyed and approximately 7,000 people had to be evacuated.

Authorities have closed the airport on the island due to the buildup of ash from the volcano.Over the weekend, flights to and from the island were cancelled.
