New York, Nov 28, : While fears have been raised about the global pathology of the pandemic by the discovery of Omicron Covid-19 in South Africa, some countries, including the United States of America, have attempted to impose travel restrictions against southern African countries.Joe Biden, the US President, announced Friday that travel restrictions will be imposed on eight African countries.
These include South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe, Lesotho.Eswatini.Mozambique.
Biden urged Americans and others around the globe to get vaccinated, except for the “precautionary” precaution.
According to Xinhua news agency, Australia and Japan were among those countries that announced mandatory screenings and quarantines on Saturday.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there was preliminary evidence that Omicron, a variant it called Omicron after the Greek letter of the Greek alphabet, was more transmissible that the Delta variant currently dominating the world and other viruses.
The first cases of the variant were also discovered in Botswana, Israel, and Belgium.
“While scientists are still trying to determine the exact Effects of the variant’s many mutations but its discovery highlights that an evolving virus continues to pose a threat to the world’s emergence after the pandemic,” The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.
Omicron was discussed by US officials with South African scientists and leaders.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stated that Omicron had not been identified in the US.This was despite the fact that stock markets in the US fell, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average experiencing its worst day in a whole year.
Omicron was designated by the WHO as a “variant or concern” by the WHO.This is a classification that refers to variants such as Delta that require close inspection from public health officials.Preliminary evidence suggests that Omicron could increase the risk of reinfection relative other variants of concern.
South African researchers discovered the first Omicron case and reported it to WHO on Wednesday.Scientists are optimistic that they were able to spot the variant early because the majority of Omicron cases are still in southern Africa.
Scientists are still waiting for lab studies to determine how coronavirus antibodies — from natural infection or vaccines – hold up against Omicron.Business Insider reported that scientists are also monitoring closely how the variant spreads around the globe, especially in countries with higher vaccination rates.
Moderna, BioNTech Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson said they are testing their vaccines against Omicron.
Merck stated Friday that its anti-viral pill decreased the risk of death and hospitalization among high-risk Covid-19 patients.
This is down from a previous estimate of 50%.
CNN reported Friday that the news of the Omicron variant, which contains an unusually high number mutations, would certainly put a wrench in the works of the Biden administration, as the President struggles to maintain his approval ratings and has a pessimistic outlook on the economy.
“The administration will have to work quickly in order to keep up with the new variant.”
The pandemic is far from over.Nearly two years have passed and more than 750,000 people have died.The television network said that Americans are still traumatized and on edge.
They also stated that it was becoming increasingly difficult to accept any good news as fear and uncertainty continue dictating so much of our lives.
