New York, Sep 6 : No.8 seed American Jessica Pegula won six games in consecutive sets in the second set of her match to defeat twice Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in straight sets and make it to the quarterfinals of women’s singles in the Arthur Ashe Stadium here on Monday.Down by 0-2 in the second set, after winning the first one easily.Pegula came back to take the lead of the match and win six games in consecutive sets in their fourth-round match that was stopped because of rain on Monday.
The 28-year-old American took the match 6-3 and 6-2 in just one hour and 13 mins, making the quarterfinals for the very first time in the US Open.
Pegula took advantage of her solid returns, winning 27/44 points won in the return (61 percent) in comparison to Kvitova who scored 22/53 points (42 percent).
She also had fewer errors that were unforced13 against 24 for Kvitova and also won six of the seven break points that went her way, whereas Kvitova could only just win two of the six chances she won.While Kvitova had 18 winners against seven from her American opponent The 32-year-old player from the Czech Republic served five double mistakes against none of Pegula.
Pegula who made the quarterfinals at both the Australian Open and at Roland Garros was eliminated in the third round of Wimbledon.
Coco Gauff and Caroline Garcia had advanced to their first US Open quarterfinals on Sunday.
