New York, Aug 30 : Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria got revenge for losing to Steve Johnson at Wimbledon by beating the American player in straight sets in the U.S Open men’s singles first round here on Tuesday.The Bulgarian started and ended with an impressive performance and was not a bit stung by the American to begin Day 2 at the US Open, as Dimitrov won with a 7-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Johnson to move on into the next round.
With a score of 5-3 in the first set the No.17 seed Dimitrov served out the final match with three straight aces in order to close the match.Moreover, he did not have break points on his serve during the match, which lasted only 94 minutes.
Dimitrov who played in his last Grand Slam singles match was also against Johnson and Johnson, but after winning the opening set after the Bulgarian was injured in the thigh that forced him to quit 4-4 2-5.The Bulgarian was offered another chance before the closing of 2022 to win the Grand Slam match against Steve Johnson at his own terms, and did so in fashion on Tuesday.
Dimitrov is hoping to return to the form that brought him surprising results earlier in the year.In March, Dimitrov reached the quarterfinals on the hard courts of Indian Wells and, in April, he made it to the semifinals of clay courts at Monte Carlo.
Dimitrov is yet to make it to the second week of an event this year, and his third-round match at Roland Garros is the furthest he has gotten to at the Grand Slam in 2022.
