US is likely to record its first monkeypox-related death

New York, Sep 1 : The US has probably had its first fatality in one of the patients identified with monkeypox in Texas who was extremely immunocompromised, as per health officials.
The patient, who is not identified, was receiving treatment in Harris County, died on Sunday.

The authorities said that the patient was suffering from “various serious ailments” apart from the virus, according to The Daily Mail.

The reason of death is still to be determined however if it is determined to be monkeypox it would make the death the first in the US from the virus in this current outbreak.

Globally, at the least 15 monkeypox-related deaths across the globe have been reported to date with two of them in Spain and another in Brazil.

The US currently has the most extensive epidemic of the virus in the world, with 18,101 cases diagnosed to date, which includes more than 9 in 10 bisexual or gay men.

The virus, which is native to West Africa, has spread to more than 40 countries to date, with nearly 50,000 cases confirmed.

Recently, an article reported that there were less cases of monkeypox recently in certain major US cities, as well as across the nation experts believe it’s too early to determine if the trend will persist.

The entry for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky last week, said she believes she is “cautiously optimistic” regarding the downward trend but cautioned that the number is growing.
