Most migrants accepted offers from Mexico’s National Institute of Migration to be taken to shelters in specific states in order to legalize their stay in Mexico for a certain period of time.

After reaching an agreement with INM officials on Tuesday, a second caravan of more that 2,500 migrants set off on November 18th from Tapachula in Mexico’s southeast state of Chiapas, and crossed the border to Guatemala. They agreed to disintegrate.

This year, Central America is witnessing an unprecedented exodus from migrants. They are apparently fleeing poverty that has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the INM, Mexico reported that more than 147,000 undocumented migrants entered Mexico between January and August. This tripled the number of undocumented migrants who entered Mexico in 2020.
