UN Chief welcomes Armenia-Azerbaijan-Russia meeting over Nagorno-Karabakh

United Nations (New York), Nov 28, : .UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres welcomed the trilateral meeting of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Russia to discuss the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
Guterres noted the joint statement and expressed appreciation for Russia’s role in facilitating continued contacts and dialogue between Armenian and Azerbaijan.Farhan Haq, the Deputy Spokesman for Secretary General, made a statement.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pahinyan all agreed to create mechanisms for delimitation and demarcation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani frontier by 2021, Putin stated on Friday after their trilateral meeting in Sochi, Xinhua’s news agency reported.

“The Secretary General is encouraged at the resumption in direct engagement at the highest levels between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and their recommitment fully implement the trilateral declarations of November 9, 2020 and January 11, 2021, as well as to take concrete steps to increase stability in the region,” the statement said.

It was referring to the ceasefire agreement of November 2020 and the January 2021 agreement to bring back transportation in Nagorno Karabakh.

Guterres reiterated UN’s principled view that lasting peace can only come through dialogue and urged parties to resolve any outstanding issues through all formats, including under the auspices the OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe).

The UN is ready to support all such efforts, including the provision of humanitarian, recovery, and peacebuilding assistance on ground, the statement said.

Since 1988, Armenia and Azerbaijan have been at odds over the Nagorno Karabakh mountainous region.Since 1994, peace talks have been held.However, there have been minor clashes.On September 27, 2020, a new round of armed conflict broke out along this contact line.

Russia then brokered a ceasefire that was implemented on November 9, 2020.
