UN chief in self-isolation following contact with Covid positive person

United Nations, Dec 8, : UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was in self-isolation following contact with someone who tested positive to Covid-19, Farhan Haq, his deputy, said.

"He has not shown any symptoms and was initially negative for the disease," Haq wrote.

He has cancelled all engagements, and he will work from his home until he is tested on Thursday.According to Xinhua news agency, the Secretary General was originally scheduled for Wednesdays high-level event at the UN Central Emergency Response Fund.

He was also expected to speak at Thursday’s open debate of Security Council on security in context of terrorism or climate change.Also, his Wednesday night attendance as guest of honor at the UN Correspondents Association gala in Manhattan is cancelled.

Guterres, 72 years old, was among the first New Yorkers to be vaccinated.He received his first shot in January 2021, and a second one a few days later.
