The UK government announced an upgrade to its rail infrastructure and said that High Speed Twos eastern leg will be scrappedThe Department for Transport claims that the Integrated Rail Plan will bring "the largest ever government investment into Britains railway network".
It includes a 96 billion-pound package (£129 billion) of upgrades and construction for rails in the Midlands, and Northern England.The new plan will see the end of the east leg of HS2 from Leeds to London, originally intended to link London and the cities of Manchester, Birmingham, and Leeds.
Grant Shapps, Transport Secretary, stated that "our plans exceed and surpass the initial ambitions HS2 or Northern Powerhouse Rail" and will deliver benefits to communities of all sizes, across the North, Midlands and up to 10-15 years before.According to the Department for Transport, the new plan is based on extensive internal and external analysis that includes the National Infrastructure Commission.
It will provide better results for passengers and be more cost-effective than the original plan.Critics accused however the British government from breaking its promises.Jim McMahon, Shadow Secretary of State of Transport, said that it was "the betrayal trust and betrayal promises as well as the betrayal investment the Midlands and north of England deserve." HS2 is the UKs second highest-speed rail, following High Speed One (HS1) that connects London with the Channel Tunnel.Phase One work on HS2 is underway between London and Birmingham.ksk/ #unveils #upgraded #rail #project.
