TT Worlds: Chinese paddlers display top form as quarters loom

Houston (USA), Nov 27, : There was excitement at the World Table Tennis Championships in Houston on Friday.The Chinese paddlers showed their prowess, with almost all of them securing a place for the quarter-finals.

Their seven-game battle for supremacy ended in seven games.Chen eventually defeated her Japanese counterpart 4-3.Sun Yingsha swept into the eighth round, while her teammates Wang Manyu (and Chen Xingtong) will face each other in the womens singles quarterfinals.Wang Yidi beat Japans Hina Hayata by 4-2 in the next round.

She will face Mima Ito, Hayata’s compatriot, in the third round.As they tried to keep the trophy they won in 2019, Wang Manyu/Sun Yingsha, the defending champions, were awarded a quarterfinals ticket in womens doubles.

Sixth seeds Petrissa Solja/Shan Xiaona fought back against the title favorites, saving multiple game points to win the opening game.Wang/Sun remained composed and won an important 3-1 victory, 16-18.

Another female combination, Chen Meng/Qian Tianai, also advanced to the final eight after a 3-1 win over Slovakian Barbora Baazova/Hana Matelova.Alvaro Robles from Spain and Ovidiu Ionescu from Romania, who were the 2019 runners up, did not replicate their feats in Houston.
