TT Worlds: Chinese paddlers display top form as quarters loom

Houston (USA), Nov 27, : There was excitement at the World Table Tennis Championships in Houston on Friday.The Chinese paddlers showed their prowess, with almost all of them securing a place for the quarter-finals.
Top seeds and world No.1st Fan Zhendong, Chen Meng defeated their rivals in the men’s singles and women’s singles competitions to advance into the last eight.

Fan defeated Wang Chuqin, his compatriot, 4-2.He will now face Lin Gaoyuan, another teammate.

Another male paddler Liang Jingkun broke the hearts of Englishmen by defeating Liam Pitchford’s hopes in a seven-game thriller that saw the Chinese win 4-3.In the next round, Liang will face Hugo Calderano, a third seed from Brazil.

Chen faced a tougher challenge against Miu Hirano, the former Asian champion.Their seven-game battle for supremacy ended in seven games.Chen eventually defeated her Japanese counterpart 4-3.

Sun Yingsha swept into the eighth round, while her teammates Wang Manyu (and Chen Xingtong) will face each other in the women’s singles quarterfinals.

Wang Yidi beat Japan’s Hina Hayata by 4-2 in the next round.She will face Mima Ito, Hayata’s compatriot, in the third round.

As they tried to keep the trophy they won in 2019, Wang Manyu/Sun Yingsha, the defending champions, were awarded a quarterfinals ticket in women’s doubles.Sixth seeds Petrissa Solja/Shan Xiaona fought back against the title favorites, saving multiple game points to win the opening game.

Wang/Sun remained composed and won an important 3-1 victory, 16-18.

Another female combination, Chen Meng/Qian Tianai, also advanced to the final eight after a 3-1 win over Slovakian Barbora Baazova/Hana Matelova.

Alvaro Robles from Spain and Ovidiu Ionescu from Romania, who were the 2019 runners up, did not replicate their feats in Houston.After losing 3-1 to Chinese rivals Fan Zhendong/Wang Chuqin, the duo’s journey through the men’s singles at the 2021 Worlds was stopped.

Lin Gaoyuan/Liang Jingkun were also promoted to the last eight after beating their French counterparts Emmanuel Lebesson/Alexandre Cassin 3-0.

After beating Chen Chien-An/Chen Szu Yuu of Chinese Taipei 3-1, Wang Chuqin/Sun Yingsha won the mixed doubles and secured a berth.
