TSMC talks to Germany over potential plant: Bericht

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is currently in talks with Germany about the possibility of setting up a European plantTaipei Times reports that Lora Ho, senior vice president for Europe and Asia sales at TSMC, believes many factors, such as customer demand, government subsidies and talent pools, could influence the final decision.

Mark Liu, Chairman of TSMC, informed shareholders in June that assessments had been made by the chipmaker to establish manufacturing facilities in Europe.TSMC is currently building up capacity in the global market, including a factory for semiconductors in Japan worth $7 billion and a facility in Arizona valued at $12 billion.

These facilities will be in production by early 2024.TSMC is currently piloting 3-nanometer chip production and plans to begin mass production by 2022.

TSMC started pilot production at its Fab 18 plant in southern Taiwan of N3 chips.Currently, Apple uses TSMCs 5nm processors for the M1 chips and it is expected that TSMCs 3nm processors will power the next generation of Apple Silicon.
