Tripura police will review UAPA cases against journalists and lawyers

Agartala : , Saturday, November 27 : , Tripura Chief Minister Biplab K.Deb directed V.S.Yadav will review the UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act), cases against journalists and lawyers.This comes after some communal incidents were reported in the State in October this year.
Tripura Home Department officials stated that the DGP, in accordance with the Chief Minister’s instructions, had asked Puneet Rastogi (ADGP, Crime Branch), to review the cases.

“In order to disrupt the law-and-order situation in the state, attempts were made last month and earlier in the month by spreading fake photos and videos of burning Tripura mosques on social media.

“To control this, and maintain peace and community harmony, the Tripura police filed cases against102 persons under different sections of UAPA/IPC.

The official stated that the persons included journalists and lawyers, most of whom were not from the state.

The Tripura police had previously asked Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube for details of more than 100 accounts that contained fake and provocative posts in connection to some incidents in the state following the October communal violence in Bangladesh.

More than 50 political parties and organisations, including the All India Imam’s Council (VIC) and the Vishwa Indian Parishad, organized rallies in Tripura condemning the attacks on minorities in Bangladesh following the communal incidents in the neighboring country.

After a few incidents involving minorities, the north Tripura district officials had promulgated prohibitory Orders under Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code in Panisagar Sub-divisions as a precautionary step.
