Agartala (Nov 21) – Police arrested West Bengal Trinamool Youth Congress president Saayoni Ghosh for invoking five IPC sections, including provocation and murder, in the midst of growing violence in Tripura ahead of November 25th civic elections.

B.Jagadeswar Reddy, West Tripura District’s Additional Inspector of Police (Urban), said Ghosh will be brought before the court on Monday.

Four of her party members are being sought by police.According to him, political workers allegedly affiliated with the ruling BJP caused trouble at a station where Ghosh and Trinamool Congress leaders met.

Reddy stated that the TMC youth leader was subject to five sections of IPC.They include: 153 (provocation to cause riot), 53-A (Promoting animosity between different religious, race, and language groups), 307 (“Attempt to kill”), 506 (“Criminal intimidation”), 120 (Concealing intent to commit an offence).

Ghosh was summoned to the East Women Police Station on Sunday morning after she was accused of committing a crime.Ghosh met with former RS member Arpita Ghosh and Tripura TMC chief Subal Bimik, and they discussed why Ghosh was summoned to the East Women Police station verbally, without any written notice.

While the TMC leaders were speaking with police at the East Women Police Station, a number of youths, allegedly BJP employees, started a commotion that forced the police to expel them.TMC leaders claimed that BJP workers had damaged many of their cars and injures several party workers.

They also attacked different houses and places since Saturday.

Dev stated that despite Supreme Court directives, the police remained a mute observer when the BJP workers were indiscriminately attacking candidates, workers and homes of TMC.

Following a Dev petition earlier in the month, the top court had requested that the Tripura Police ensure that no political party was prevented from peacefully exercising its rights to campaign for the forthcoming municipal elections.

Ex-Union minister Babul Supriyo quit the BJP to join the Trinamool.

Transport Minister Firhad Hakim, along with many Trinamool leaders, visited Tripura over the last few days and campaigned in support of the candidates for the civic elections.Abhishek Banerjee, the National General Secretary of TMC will visit Tripura Monday to support party candidates.

Banerjee tweeted Sunday: “Tripura Chief minister (Biplab Kul Deb) is so brazen now that even Supreme Court orders seem not to bother him.” Instead of protecting their safety, he has sent goons repeatedly to target our supporters and female candidates.Democracy being mocked under BJP.”

On Sunday, Tripura’s ruling BJP accused Trinamool Congress for creating lawlessness in the state.Nabendu Bhattacharjee, a party spokesperson said that Trinamool was bringing large numbers of Assam and West Bengal people to their meeting.They are also spending enormous amounts in the state from various chit fund earnings.

Bhattacharjee said to the media that people would stop the TMC conspiracy at Thursday’s civic election.He also stated that SaayoniGhosh had abused BJP workers on Saturday while the Chief Minister addressed an election meeting.
