Political experts believe that Trinamool has emerged as a formidable party and that a multi-corner contest will be evident in the 2023 assembly election — between the BJP and CPI-M led Left parties, Trinamool and the Congress. This is in contrast to previous elections, where the main contests were mainly between Left parties and non-Left parties led Congress.

Although the State Election Commission (SEC), has yet to release the party-wise vote percentage, an unofficial calculation shows that the BJP won 59% votes in Tripura’s civic polls. The Left received 19.65%, the Trinamool Congress, (TMC) –16.39%, and Congress – 2.07 percent.

On Thursday, approximately five lakh urban voters, out of the total 27 lakh state electorate, were eligible to vote.

The SEC reports that over 81 percent of voters have exercised their right to vote.

Despite allegations of violence from all Opposition parties in pre-poll, the BJP had previously won 112 (34%) seats in seven urban local bodies.

After Sunday’s declarations of results, the party retook power in 12 municipal bodies as well as the politically important Agartala Municipal Corporation.

All 51 seats in AMC were won by BJP candidates, as well as 165 seats in Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats.

According to the SEC officials the main opposition party CPI-M won three municipal bodies in Kailashahar and Ambassa, while the TMC won one in Panisagar Municipal council. The Trinamool Congress took second place in 27 of 51 seats in the prestigious AMC, putting up a formidable challenge to both the ruling BJP as well as the key CPI-M-led Left parties.

The Left parties and TMC did not nominate candidates for all 334 seats in the civic election to the AMC and 19 urban local bodies – Municipal Councils, Nagar Panchayats – alleging unprecedented political violence and attacks, as well as intimidation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Sharma, BJP President J.P.Nadda, various central leaders, and Chief Ministers in BJP-ruled States, congratulated the state leaders on their performance in civic polls.

Modi tweeted: “The people in Tripura have sent a clear message – they prefer politics of good government.” I want to thank them for their unwavering support for BJP Tripura. These blessings give us more strength to work for each and every person in Tripura.

“I would like laud the BJP Tripura Karyakartas, who worked tirelessly on ground and served people.Modi stated in another tweet that the State Government, under the leadership of Shri Biplab Ji, has been at forefront of many initiatives, which have been duly blessed by the people.”

TMC’s National Secretary Abhishek Banerjee described the party’s performance at the Tripura civic election as a major success in advance of the 2023 assembly elections under BJP-ruled Tripura.

He tweeted: “This is despite our activities starting only 3 months ago and BJP Tripura left no stone unturned in order to butcher democracy.Bravo to all the brave soldiers from AITC Tripura for their courage.

He said in another tweet, “It is extraordinary for a party starting with negligible presence and succeed in contesting municipal elections and emerge principal opposition in the state having more than 20% vote share.”

The BJP claimed that despite conspiracies the party won a landslide victory at the civic polls.

Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb tweeted, “Referendum for Tripura Urban Local Body Elections announced today (Sunday), shows the faith of people in the developmental policies by Hon’ble PM Shri NarendraModi Ji.It also demonstrates their belief in his motto Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas Sabka Vishwas

“I am grateful to all the people in Tripura and Dev Tulya karyakartas from Tripura BJP for their love and support.Deb stated in another tweet that she considers your votes for BJP Tripura blessings. These blessings motivate her to work harder for the state’s development of all 37 Lakh citizens.

The state of Tripura was made a full-fledged nation 50 years ago.The Left Front, CPI-M, governed it for 35 years (1978-1988, 1993-2018), and the Congress and allied parties ruled the rest. The BJP has been the main political force since 2018, with the TMC trying to establish bases in northeastern states. This led to a multi-cornered contest for the upcoming assembly elections.

After the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) first retaken Tripura’s power in March 2018, and the rise of the tribal-based political party Tiprahaa Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance, (TIPRA), led by Pradyot Bikram Deb Barman earlier in the year, the two main traditional political parties — the Congress and the CPI-M — are slowly fading away.

Both the Left-leaning and the Congress did poorly in the Lok Sabha polls in 2019.

The Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council was elected in 2021.The three-tier Gram Panchayat elections were held in 2019.However, the opposition parties claimed “large scale rigging by the ruling party.”

TMC, headed by Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal Chief Minister, has targeted Tripura and Assam, Meghalaya and Goa to expand its base. This was fueled by its electoral success at the March-April Bengal elections.

Despite not having any heavyweight leaders, except for Subal Bhowmik, Prakash Das, and Ashis Das, BJP MLA Ashis Das have joined the TMC.However, the TMC has been organizing political events for the past three month with the support of its MPs, Ministers, and leaders from Bengal.

Sanjib Deb, a political commentator, stated that the ruling party usually has an electoral advantage because of the multi-cornered contest expected in the upcoming elections.

“The TMC, the newest force, is still to establish its organisational structures in the state. There is no heavyweight face in Tripura for the Bengal-based party.

“Except for a south Indian party and no regional parties, who are primarily leader centric in India, have so far achieved electoral success beyond its original territory,” Deb, editor at North East Colors, told IANS.

After a series of electoral setbacks, the main opposition CPI-M suffered another major blow when its two top leaders, Gautam Das, state secretary, and Bijan Dhar (Left Front convener) — both died due to Covid-19.

The party recently appointed Jitendra Chaudhury, a tribal leader, as its state secretary to regain support among the tribes.
