Dar Es Salaam, Nov 29, : Tanzania’s Minister for Agriculture Adolf Mkenda stated that 3 billion Tanzanian shillings (about $13 million) have been set aside for the purchase of a spray plane to combat locust invasions. Mkenda stated that the government had purchased the spray plane to combat the locusts invading the country, according to Xinhua news agency.
He stated that Tanzania received support from the Desert Locust Control Organization for Eastern Africa and International Red Locust Control Organization for Central and Southern Africa during the locusts’ invasions.However, purchasing its own spray plane could help in the fight against these destructive pests.
Minister: “When locusts infest our country, we request spray planes from these organizations but acquiring our spray plane will boost our fight against them,” he added.
Mkenda stated that the purchase of the spray aircraft will be in conjunction with the strengthening of the agricultural aerial spraying system.
Swarms of locusts invaded northern Tanzanian towns of Monduli and Longido in February 2021.However, they were exterminated before inflicting any damage to farm crops.
