Tamil Nadu plans 500 Kalignar canteens

Chennai, Nov 25, : 500 Kalaignar canteens will be opened by the Tamil Nadu government, according to R.Sakkarapani, state Food Minister.
At a meeting in New Delhi, Piyush Goyal, Union Food Minister, addressed the audience on the model community kitchen program to address malnutrition in the country.He also asked the Central government for sponsorship of the 650 Amma canteens in accordance with the National Food Security Act.

Each month, a kitchen costs Rs 3.5 lakh.Sakkarapani stated that this scheme must be run and maintained successfully.

In order to provide food at a subsidised rate for the poor and the needy, the previous AIADMK government established 650 Amma canteens in various local bodies throughout the state.

These canteens are also available in all government medical colleges hospitals and in government hospitals located in district headquarters for the benefit and convenience of patients’ attendants.

Canteens offer idli at Rs 1, pongal, rice at Rs 5, curd Rice at Rs 3 during the daytime, chapati (2), and dal Curry at Rs 3.

Minister said that Amma canteens provide food for free during natural disasters.

He also stated that between June 1st and November 18th, Amma canteen was used by approximately 2.15 million people, including construction workers and migrants.
