Singapore, December 7, 2008 : Chinese paddlers Fan Zhendong (MEN) and Sun Yingsha (WOMEN) were the winners of the singles at Tuesday’s World Table Tennis Cup Finals. In the final match of this season’s end tournament, Tomokazu Harimoto from Japan was defeated by Fan.
The final was a heated affair.Fan won the first game 8-8, and took a 7-2 lead the second.But, world No.Before losing the game, 1 lost his advantage.
Fan led 9-8 at the end of the third match.Fan called for a timeout, before taking back his position in favor with an 11-9 victory.
Harimoto let loose his signature roar at every point of the match but it was difficult to keep Fan from rolling.After a quick swoop, the new World Table Tennis Championships champion was able to win his next two games, 11-7 and 11-5, for his second title within two weeks.
After losing Monday’s semi-finals, Fan’s compatriot Wang Chuqin was ranked third along with Brazilian ace Hugo Calderano.
Sun won a significant title for their careers after falling to Chen Meng’s and Wang Manyu’s finals earlier in the year.
Sun held off Wang Yidi’s return and won 4-2 in an all Chinese final.
Sun looked well on her way towards becoming champion, winning three of the first three matches 11-3, 17-15 and 11-6.
But Wang proved to be more difficult than that, taking two games back, 11-7, 11-6.Sun held firm and won the sixth match 11-8.
Chen was followed by Hina Hayata from Japan in third place for the women’s category.
