Wednesday’s events resulted from the inconclusive 2018 election results, which caused a long process of finding a government in a political environment where certain parties do everything they can to prevent their ideological opponents having any influence.

Andersson’s election was, in comparison, a breeze. To be elected prime minister, she needed a majority of the 349-seat Riksdag lawmakers to vote for her.She was supported by 117, but rejected by 174.57 deputies remained absent. One deputy was absent.

Andersson was elected following an eleventh-hour deal with Left Party. They demanded a pension increase for approximately 7,00,000.In return for not pressing red, they wanted to keep the red button off.

Later in the day, however, the budget proposal of the ruling coalition was defeated in favor of the budget jointly proposed by the Moderate Party and the Sweden Democrats.

This was after the Center Party, who accepted Andersson’s appointment as prime minister to keep out the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats voted against the government’s budget proposal.

They viewed the deal as too extreme a turn to Left despite the fact the government had made concessions to appease them.

Andersson, who has been the finance minister since 2014 under former Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said she could lead the country using the opposition’s budget. She described it as only minor tweaks. The Green Party however had a different opinion.

The Riksdag approved the opposition’s budget. The Greens announced they would quit the government because they couldn’t stand behind a budget negotiated in Sweden Democrats’ name.

The Riksdag must now elect a new prime minster. The Green Party said that they would support Andersson. She in turn stated that she was willing to lead a single-party government.
