Stokes is not a sure thing for opening Ashes Test. Giles

Brisbane, Nov 29, : Ashley Giles, managing director of England mens cricket team, said that Ben Stokes progress would closely monitored.

He also suggested that he could be a doubtful start, given that he hasn’t played competitive cricket in nearly five monthsStokes also received a blow to the arm during the visitors practice session on Saturday, but Giles said it wasnt serious and that the all rounder was "progressing well" in his training with the squad.

Stokes was an unexpected addition to the England squad for five-Test Ashes.He was recovering from a second finger injury and prioritising his mental well-being "Ben seems to be doing well, and its great having him around.We have to be patient with him.He hasnt played much cricket lately, which is not ideal for anyone, especially those who havent played much cricket.Well just keep building up him and see where we stand at the end of this four day game," Giles said to news.com.au on Sunday evening.Stokes sustained a fracture in his left index finger in April while playing for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2021.

He needed surgery after he left the tournament.Stokes led a new ODI team to a 3-0 series victory over Pakistan in July after the first choice team was unable to play due to COVID-19.

Stokes had a second operation in October to remove scar tissue, and two screws from his left index finger "I am hopeful and I would like to always be confident.We have to treat Ben with the same care as any other person who has not played a lot of cricket.

Giles said that he will be difficult to keep back if he is willing to go.The England players will be looking to get Test-match ready when they begin their four day warm-up against the England Lions on Tuesday.The Test players from the ICC T20 World Cup in UAE, will travel to Brisbane (the venue for the first Test) on Tuesday with Chris Silverwood, their head coach.
