New Delhi, Dec 8, 2008 : Following a Wednesday meeting, several farmer organizations under the Samyukt Kisan Morcha will likely make a major announcement about their year-long agitation.SKM will likely meet with union ministers. Sources claim that farmers will cease their protest if they are given clarification on the proposal regarding several critical demands made by the union government.
On Wednesday morning, a five-member committee of Samyukt Kisan Morcha held an emergency meeting before the crucial meeting at 2.p.m.
The SKM is expected to consult other farmer groups before making a major announcement.
Farmers demanded the withdrawal of all cases against them.
They stated that they would end the protest if the government fulfilled all of their demands.
Union government asked farm leaders for their feedback on the proposal that said farmers should end agitation first, and then withdraw cases.
After the repeal of all three farm laws, SKM made several other demands to the union government.Most of these were accepted.
The government wants farmers not to protest the assembly elections in Punjab next January.The Union Home Ministry submitted a draft proposal Tuesday to the SKM.
Farmers are demanding, in addition to the repeal of farm laws and compensation for all those who died during the agitation; legal guarantee on minimum support price; and withdrawal of all cases against farmers.
