Harare, Nov 28, : Six women cricketers from Sri Lanka who participated in a qualifying tournament for the World Cup in Zimbabwe were positive for COVID-19. It is not yet known if the players have contracted this new virus.
The Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) stated that steps will be taken to bring the Sri Lankan women’s cricket team from Zimbabwe back.
The International Cricket Council decided to cancel the qualifying tournament for women’s cricket in Zimbabwe after the discovery of a COVID-19 variant.
A number of countries were forced to tighten border controls and place restrictions on travel from Zimbabwe after the detection of Omicron, a new coronavirus variant, in South Africa.
After Saturday’s game between Sri Lanka and West Indies was called off due to COVID-19 testing, the International Cricket Council decided to cancel all remaining World Cup qualifiers.
The International Cricket Council announced that Bangladesh, Pakistan and the West Indies would be able to progress to the World Cup in New Zealand next year based on their respective rankings.These three countries will join South Africa, Australia, India and New Zealand.
Chris Tetley, ICC Head of Events, stated in a statement that “we are incredibly disappointed to cancel the remainder”
“But, with travel restrictions from a few African countries being imposed at such a short notice, there was a serious chance that teams would not be able to return home.We have considered all options, but it is not feasible.
We will fly the teams out to Zimbabwe as soon as we can,” the ICC stated in a statement Saturday.
Some countries have tightened border controls and placed restrictions on travel from many southern African countries, including Zimbabwe, following the detection of Omicron variants in South Africa.
South African sport was shut down Friday after travel bans forced golfers and rugby teams to scramble for exit.
