According to SII, the supply of vaccines via COVAX by SII is expected to rise substantially in Q1, 2022.

The resumption in exports is tied to SII exceeding its original goal to produce 1,000,000 doses of Covidshield before the end of this calendar year.

The statement stated that SII reached this milestone earlier than expected through rapid expansion of its production capacity at its Pune site.

Adar Poonawalla is the CEO of Serum Institute of India.

He said, “I want my workforce to be commended for their extraordinary efforts in achieving this milestone, with 1,000,000 doses of Covidshield produced by SII.Our colleagues have been tirelessly working since March 2020 to bring these life-saving vaccines to the people. We began to invest at-risk in Covid-19 production in March 2020.

“It’s a great moment to start exports again, both for us, our COVAX partners, and the low- and middle-income countries that we support.” India’s low-cost, high quality vaccines and pharmaceuticals have been a major source of supply for the world. We are happy to once again support the global vaccination effort.

“The resumption supply from SII is an important step for COVAX as the company enters its busiest period for shipping vaccines into participating countries.COVAX’s portfolio has become more diverse than it was in January, when we received our first SII delivery. However, Covishield is still an important product that could help us protect hundreds and millions of people over the coming months,” Seth Berkley CEO of Gavi (the vaccine alliance that runs COVAX), said.

The Government of India approved earlier this week the export of the Covid vaccine to COVAX.

Official sources claim that the government has granted permission to SII to export 50 million Covishield doses to Nepal, Tajikistan, and Mozambique under the UN-backed COVAX global vaccination programme.

SII will export Covishield to Bangladesh as part of COVAX.

According to the source, the Union government allowed the commercial export of both Covishield (and Covaxin) of vaccines due to sufficient stock with the states and Union Territories and with the manufacturers.

Friday morning’s update showed that over 20.70 million Covid vaccine doses were still available in the states and UTs.

COVAX is co-led jointly by Gavi, Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations(CEPI), and WHO.India stopped exporting vaccines in April of this year, amid the second pandemic wave, in order to vaccinate itself first.
