Seoul, Nov 26th : South Korea closely monitors North Korea’s missile and nuclear activities in close cooperation, Seoul’s Unification Ministry stated Friday. According to Yonhap News Agency, the announcement came after reports suggested that North appears to be continuing operation of a nuclear reactor at its mainstay Yongbyon compound.
38 North, an American monitoring website, reported Wednesday that steam was detected coming from the 5-megawatt reactor.This indicates at least one generator is operating, citing satellite imagery.
Cha Duck-chul, deputy Ministry spokesperson, declined to comment on the report but said that intelligence matters are being monitored by the government.
He stated that the government continued to monitor North Korea’s missile and nuclear activities under close South Korea-US coordination.
“South Korea and North Korea agreed to share a common goal of a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.Both sides should work together.”
Cha stated that the government is also monitoring any signs of an event in North Korea for the 2017 launch of an inter-continental ballistic weapon (ICBM).He added that no unusual activities have been detected.
