Security Council does not adopt resolution regarding climate-related security threats

United Nations, New York : The UN Security Council rejected a resolution that would have included climate-related security risks as part of UN conflict prevention strategies.

This was to counter the possibility of conflict relapseThe Council rejected the draft in a recorded vote, with 12 voting for (India and Russia) to 2 against (Russia and India), one abstention from (China).

This was due to the negative vote of a permanent member.Xinhua reported.

The draft was co-sponsored by Niger and Ireland as Council President for December.It would have asked the Secretary General to include climate-related security risks in comprehensive UN conflict-prevention strategies.
