New Delhi, Nov 24, : , The Supreme Court issued notice Wednesday on a plea seeking to direct all 23 IITs to comply with the reservation policy for admission to research degree programmes and faculty recruitment. A bench headed Justice L.N.Rao, and Justices B.R.After hearing arguments, Gavai and B.V.Nagarathna issued notice to Centre as well as all IITs.
Sachchida Pandey filed the plea through Advocate Ashwani Kumar Dubey.The plea stated that the IITs do not follow transparent processes for recruiting faculty members.
This “opens up the door for non-deserving candidates to enter the IITs through connections that increase the chances of corruption favouritism, discrimination and favouritism”.
It claimed that the IITs are not following the policy that allows socially marginalised groups to be reserved for the SC (15%), ST (7.5%) and OBC (27%).
“It is submitted, that the process of taking admissions into the Research Programme and the appointment of faculty members by Respondent No 2-24(IITs), are completely unconstitutional and illegal.
The plea stated that the Respondents 2-24 do not follow the guidelines of reservation as required by the Constitution mandate.
It stated that the Central government had written to IIT directors (Kharagpur Madras Bombay Kanpur, Kanpur and Roorkee) on June 9, 2008 to request the implementation of the reservation for SC/ST/OBC categories in the requirement for a teaching position at assistant professor level in science technology and at all levels (assistant professor, associate, and professor) in the humanities and management departments.
“Issue a Writ of Mandamus or any other writ or order against the respondents (Centre, 23 IITs), thereby directing respondents to follow the reservations policies in admission in research degree programs recruitment of faculty in IITs,” was the plea.
