Samsung unveils new auto chips to power high-end cars

Seoul, November 30, : Samsung Electronics unveiled three new automotive chips Tuesday as global carmakers are looking for more advanced chips to make cars with better connectivity and more sophisticated infotainment features.
According to the South Korean tech giant, its latest chip products will enable faster 5G connectivity for downloading high-definition video content, immersive infotainment systems, and stable power supply.

Park Jae-hong, executive Vice President of the company’s System LSI custom SOC Business, stated in a statement that “Smarter and more connected automobile technologies for enriched in–vehicle experiences including entertainment, safety, and comfort are becoming critical features in the road.”

The Exynos Auto V7 in-vehicle infotainment is one of the three.It’s installed in Volkswagen’s latest In-Car Application-Server 3.1, which was developed by LG Electronics’ vehicle components solutions division.

The chip includes a neural processing unit that “provides convenient services such as virtual assistant that can process visual, audio, and speech data for face, gesture, and speech recognition features.”

Samsung has intensified its efforts to develop advanced chips in cars, a market that has seen a significant increase in recent years, according to Yonhap news agency.

More cars now have advanced features such as artificial intelligence and 5G-based telecomms.

IHS Markit, a London-based research firm, forecasts that the global market for automotive electronics will grow by 7 percent annually to reach $67.6 Billion in 2026.
