Omicron scare: DNA sequencing of Andhra man samples

Visakhapatnam, Dec 8, : The Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh was gripped by an omicron crisis.Authorities have sent samples from a man who recently returned to India and tested positive for Covid-19.
The man was in Srikakulam, and his samples were sent by him to Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology in Hyderabad for genome sequencing.

Srikesh Lathkar, a Srikakulam district collector, said that the genome sequencing report was still awaiting his approval.

He stated that only after receiving the report could it be confirmed whether he was infected with Omicron.The collector advised people not to panic, as all necessary steps were taken in order to solve the case.

After a Covid test at the airport, the man from Santabommali, Srikakulam district, had returned from South Africa on November 23.He later developed fever and was able to have a second test at the local Primary Health Centre on December 5.

Fear gripped the area as word spread about Omicron cases in the country.These Omicron cases were reported by passengers returning from ‘at-risk’ countries including South Africa.

Officials confirmed that the man and his family were in isolation at home.Social media rumors spread that the man was infected with Omicron.

Health officials clarified that samples were sent to CCMB for confirmation.

So far, there has not been any Omicron case in Andhra Pradesh.

Dr Hymavathi, director of public health and family welfare, also denied reports that 30 foreign returnedes were missing from the state.

Andhra Pradesh does not have an international airport, but the state receives alerts from the central authorities regarding passengers returning to the state after landing in Hyderabad, Chennai or any other international airports.

Around 30 passengers from the Visakhapatnam area returned last week.The state medical and health departments were monitoring their health.

To monitor and screen travelers, the health department has also placed medical teams at all state airports.
