S.Korean islands of Dokdo not named on iPhone maps in 22 nations

Seoul 25 Aug : The most eastern part of South Korea’s islets of Dokdo weren’t listed in iPhone maps in the US, Britain and 20 other countries, a professor told in Seoul on Thursday.This comes amid tensions with Tokyo over Japan’s new claim to the East Sea outcroppings.
Dokdo has been a constant cause of tension between these two countries and is a source of tension since Tokyo continues to make assertions of sovereignty in its policy documents as well as in public statements and textbooks for schools.

The location of Dokdo wasn’t visible in the 22 nations’ iPhone maps, including France, Egypt and the Philippines according to Seo Kyoung-duk Seo Kyoung-duk, an Sungshin Women’s University professor well known for his efforts to increase awareness of Korean foreign interests, according to Yonhap news agency.

Dokdo was only visible in the Apple smartphone map in South Korea, while the islets were identified as Takeshima as the name that Tokyo utilizes in its claims to sovereignty of the islets in Japan.

In the year 2019, Seo surveyed the online map service of Google Inc.and discovered that Dokdo was labeled as Liancourt Rocks in 26 different countries.The term Dokdo was not used in the South Korean version of the map, whereas the Japanese version identified the islands as Takeshima.

Liancourt Rocks is a name that comes from an French whaling vessel that first brought Dokdo to Europe in the 19th century.

Seo claimed that he has been protesting continuously for the last three years for Dokdo’s name appear listed on Google Maps but the U.S.internet giant hasn’t given in to his request.

“It is a major problem that the maps of Google as well as Apple that are used and searched by billions of people every day, don’t have the proper labeling for Dokdo,” Seo said.Seo said he intends to press both companies to correct the issue.

South Korea has been in the effective the control of Dokdo, with a small police detachment since the liberation of Japan’s colonial rule of 1910-45.
