S. Korea reconsiders its plan for UN peacekeeping conference due to Omicron scare

Seoul, Nov 30, : South Korea is rethinking plans to host an international conference on UN peacekeeping.The event was scheduled for next month and was cancelled due to concerns about Omicron spreading.
The ministry is expected to host the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial 2021 Seoul on December 7-8, and the Korea-Africa forum the following day.However, concerns over the latest variant, first reported by Yonhap news agency, have clouded the relevant plans.

“The Omicron virus is rapidly spreading and the government is rethinking (plans) for the December events.In a press conference, Ahn Eunju, the deputy spokesperson for the ministry, stated that they will share more details with you later.

The UN peacekeeping forum was to be the nation’s largest in-person international conference after the pandemic.However, the ministry was forced by a travel ban to prevent foreign arrivals from eight African nations from rethinking the plans to invite over 100 countries to the forum.

A foreign ministry official stated that they had been in consultation with the UN over several options.

The official stated that the ministry had also been in consultation with members of the African Union (the co-organiser of this forum) about possible changes to the meeting.

Consultations with local health authorities are also ongoing.
