S.Korea is hopeful for Iran’s nuclear negotiations to progress

Seoul, Nov 29, : .South Korea welcomed Monday’s resumption negotiations on the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement and expressed hope for “substantive Progress” amid ongoing diplomatic row over Teheran assets that have been frozen under US sanctions.
In Vienna, the US, Iran, and five world powers met earlier in the day in order to discuss ways to save the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).This plan imposed restrictions on Teheran’s nuclear program in return for loosening sanctions.

According to Yonhap news agency, Russia, Britain, France, Germany, China and France were also present at the talks.

“The Korean government is looking forward to substantive progress and encourages everyone involved to engage in patience,” the foreign ministry stated in a statement.

It stated that it hoped all parties to the nuclear agreement would reach an agreement and adhere to it in order for regional peace and stability.

The Seoul government, for its part, pledged to continue “diplomatic attempts” to revive the landmark agreement, given the importance of the alliance with the US and its relations with Iran.

Seoul is not a party to the multilateral agreement, but it has closely communicated on the matter with Washington amid a long diplomatic feud between Washington and Iran over its assets here that were frozen by US sanctions.

US sanctions have placed restrictions on Iran assets worth $7 billion in South Korean banks following Washington’s 2018 withdrawal.
