This was due to concerns about the new Covid-19 variant Omicron.
According to the communique, Xinhua news agency reported that the decision was taken late Sunday night after an extraordinary cabinet meeting regarding Rwanda’s response to Omicron variant.

The communique stated that although the variant was not detected in Rwanda, it is potentially dangerous.Rwandans and Rwandan residents are urged to be extra vigilant in the enforcement and practice of preventive measures.

It stated that passengers traveling from or having a history of travel to the affected countries will need to be quarantined for seven days at their own expense.

It was added that all arriving passengers must be quarantined for 24 hours at a designated hotel at the cost of their own expense.

The communique states that a Covid PCR test is required upon arrival. An additional test, which is covered by the government, will be performed on the seventh day following arrival at a designated testing site.

The communique stated that all persons attending events or gatherings such as concerts, weddings, festivals, or exhibitions must be fully vaccinated.

It also stated that gatherings should be held outdoors or in well ventilated areas as much as possible.

It advised Rwandans to be fully vaccinated and regularly tested, and to continue practicing Covid-19 preventive steps.

In October, Rwanda lifted quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated travelers arriving in the country.
