Rwanda reinstates mandatory quarantine in order to limit the development of new Covid-19 variants

Kigali, Nov 28, : Rwanda will reinstate the mandatory 24-hour quarantine for all incoming travellers after the detection of a new Covid-19 type in South Africa, the Ministry of Health stated in a statement.

It has reinstated the 24-hour quarantine in designated hotels for all Rwandans arriving to Rwanda, according to a Friday statement.It stated that the measures are being taken in order to stop the spread of the new variant, as well as to preserve the achievements Rwanda has made in managing the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to Xinhua news agency, the Ministry asked everyone, including vaccinated, to observe Covid-19 preventive steps.This includes proper wearing of face masks, social ditancing, hand washing, ensuring indoor ventilation, and avoiding crowds, crowded places, and unnecessary social gatherings.

On a state media channel earlier, Daniel Ngamije, Rwandas Health Minister, stated that additional measures will be announced as scientists perform tests to determine if the mutation is more transmissible and infectious than other variants.In October, Rwanda lifted quarantine measures for those who had been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 upon arrival in the country.
