By IN Bureau New Delhi, Nov 24, 2014: Russia will host the first ever joint naval exercises with ASEAN member countries in the South China Sea.It will begin next Wednesday.
Alexander Ivanov (Russia’s Permanent Representative to ASEAN) has announced that the exercises will take place in the region of North Sumatra between December 1-3.Moscow will send its large anti-submarine ship Admiral Panteleev to participate in them.This is part of the Pacific Fleet, part of the Russian Navy.
“The Fourth Russia-ASEAN Summit decided to hold joint naval exercises.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was present at the meeting via videoconference on October 28, 2021.The meeting was scheduled to coincide with the 30th anniversary celebrations of the establishment of relations between our country, ASEAN, “the diplomat said to RIA Novosti, Russia’s state-owned news agency.
The head of the diplomatic mission stated that many decisions were made at the summit to strengthen the strategic partnership between Russia, ASEAN and China.
“The exercises are intended to practice interaction between the Russian Navy, the Navy of the ASEAN members countries to ensure safety of maritime commercial activities.
They will be divided into two phases – virtual and maritime,” stated Ivanov.
He informed him that Prabovo Subiyanto (the Defence Minister of Indonesia) is planning to inaugurate this exercise from the Russian destroyer.
According to IndiaNarrative.com reports, Moscow is increasing defence partnerships with like-minded regional partners, including India.On Monday, Nikolay Patrushev, Secretary of the Russian Security Council was in Colombo to discuss the Kremlin’s renewed focus on South Asia.
