New Delhi, Nov 30, : After the Opposition staged an occupation over Chairman M.Venkaiah Naidu refusing to lift the suspension of 12 MPs, the Rajya Sabha’s proceedings were rescheduled for Tuesday. Pralhad Joshi, Parliamentary Affairs Minister, asked Harivansh Narayan Singh, Deputy Chairman, to adjourn in the absence of Opposition.Pralhad Joshi stated: “Ours are a Democratic government and our leader also very democratic so we don’t want to run this House without the Opposition.” They have boycotted it for one day, so let them return tomorrow to take up the bills.The government is open for constructive criticism.
The House was then adjourned by the Deputy Chairman until Wednesday at 11 a.m.
Piyush Goyal, the Opposition Leader, blasted the Opposition and justified its decision.He also recounted the sequence of events that led to their suspension.”The House was in danger because some Opposition MPs had caused a ruckus, attacked women marshals, and attempted to vandalise it during the last Monsoon session.”
Tuesday’s appeal by the Opposition for a revocation of suspension was denied by Naidu.
He observed that he was not considering the appeal by Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge for revoke suspensions of 12 MPs until the errant members apologise and the House functions smoothly.”
At this point, Opposition members staged an unofficial walk-out.
Kharge had raised this issue under rule 256, stating that the suspension was against House rules.
“The members have been suspended for conduct that occurred during the previous session and is against House rules,” the LoP stated, adding that there is no need to apologize.
The Chairman replied that the House had adopted a motion, and that on August 11, only, the Chair would name the MPs.
