Rio de Janeiro : , Nov 26 : , Former President of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), Carlos Arthur Nuzman was sentenced to 30 Years and 11 Months in Prison for alleged corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion. Judge Marcelo Bretas stated that the 79-year old played a key role in a scheme to purchase votes for Rio de Janeiro to host 2016 Olympics.
Bretas stated in the ruling that Carlos Nuzman’s criminal behavior was highly reproachable.”(He) has shown himself to be greedy and that, despite knowing the criminal nature his activities.used public office to commit crimes.”
Brazilian law allows Nuzman to remain free while he appeals.
Sergio Cabral, an ex-Gov.of Rio, and Arthur Soares, an entrepreneur, and Leonardo Gryner (Rio 2016 operations chief) were also found guilty.
Investigators found that Gryner, Nuzman and Cabral coordinated the payment of a two-million-dollar bribe to Lamine Diack, the former president of International Association of Athletics Federations, and his son Papa Diack in return for Olympic hosting rights.
After being placed under house arrest, Nuzman was forced to resign as COB President — a position he held for more than 20 years — in October 2017.
