Rhine waters rise in the western part of Germany

Berlin 20th August : The level of water of the Rhine river that has been sinking throughout a prolonged time of dry weather, rose by a few centimeters in the western part of Germany over the weekend, as per official figures.

In the midst of dry weather the low water levels have a direct impact on the amount of cargo ships can move on the waterway.WSV data revealed that the real amount of the channel around Kaub was 1.45 metres on Friday.Officials have said that projections suggest that the level of water could increase up to 1.50 meters by the end of Tuesday, and then begin sinking again.Kaub in Rhineland-Palatinate is an important point of contact for shipping along the Rhine.

The water levels are of particular importance due to the fact that the river is extremely low at this point.Freight and passenger vessels struggled with low levels of water for several weeks.

Skippers have to consider the draft of the ship into consideration in carrying their cargo. At low levels of water, they can transport less freight and eventually the transport via river becomes costly.
