Rehabilitating an ailing elephant that was rescued in MP is necessary to ensure its recovery

Bhopal : Dec 14, 2014 Laxmi is a 30 year-old female elephant that was rescued by a group two weeks ago from the Chhatarpur district in Madhya Pradesh.

She would require special medical attention and help with multiple ailmentsThe elephant is being photographed at Bada Malhera forest department under the supervision of vets and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals India (PETA).

It is suffering from debilitating pain due to long-term starvation.Khushboo Gupta is the chief advocate officer for PETA-India.

He was entrusted with the care and management of the elephant by the forest department.IANS reported that Laxmi had so far experienced cruelty, misery and neglect.

Gupta stated that although she has had multiple illnesses, her condition is improving and they are hopeful that she can roam freely, take a bath in ponds and enjoy the company of elephants.Gupta stated that an ailing elephant will require special care for at least a few months in order to heal from multiple diseases.

This would be possible if she was under the supervision of wildlife veterinarian experts.She needs to be kept at a rehabilitation center, as none exist for Madhya Pradesh animals.

The authorities have been notified and recommended that the elephant be transported to Karnatakas wildlife rehabilitation center.Gupta said that PETA would pay all expenses for transporting the elephant from Karnataka to Karnataka.

The elephant was rescued while begging for food on December 1, and has been found to be suffering from chronic arthritis and joint deformities.Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Alok Kumar has entrusted PETA India with the responsibility of ensuring that Indias thinnest elephant, Laxmi, receives much-needed veterinary treatment, food, water, and other essential care.

PETA-India had called for urgent intervention by the forest department, Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), and Project Elephant division of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.The pachyderm is being treated for joint pain and abscesses on her hips.

Deep wounds on her left ear are being cleaned and dressed.The injuries were likely to have been caused by an elephant goud or ankus, a hooked iron rod used by mahouts to control elephants.
