Washington, Nov 29, : , Republicans are locking in newly-gerrymandered maps to the legislatures of several US battleground state, The New York Times reported in a recent report. The report stated that Republican state legislators in Texas, North Carolina and Ohio have either created supermajorities that can override a governor’s vote or reduced competitive districts to the point where Republicans’ advantage is almost impenetrable.
According to the report, this redistricting cycle “builds upon a political trend which accelerated in 2011 when Republicans in swing state including Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan drew highly-gerrymandered state legislative map.”
Gerrymandering can be used by both sides in swing states, as well as less competitive ones.Xinhua news agency reported.
The NYT report said that Democrats in deep-blue states such as Illinois are looking to increase their advantage in legislatures and Republicans in deep red states like Utah or Idaho are doing the exact same.
