Brisbane, Nov 29 : Ashley Giles, director of the England men’s team suggested on Sunday that Michael Vaughan, former captain of England, should be allowed to be rehabilitated.
He was involved in the racism controversy with Azeem Rafiq, a former Yorkshire playerRafiq claimed that Vaughan told him, along with two other Asian players, that there were "too few of you lot" and that they needed to do something about it before a match in 2009.
Rafiqs claim meant that the 47-year-old was removed from BBCs coverage of Ashes in Australia. The series will air in December.
Vaughan, exYorkshire, has denied the allegation in numerous interviews, including a Saturday interview in which he said that he was sorry for the pain he had suffered.Giles acknowledged that racism was not a place in cricket, but when Giles was asked about Vaughan (his former England captain), he stated that refusing to offer people a second chance and an education was "not a healthy path" forward for the sport.
He said, "We all make mistakes and will again." However, we must be able to tolerate, educate, and rehabilitate .," "Not giving people second chances.Im not sure this is a healthy way forward for our society because its not going to bring people forward either to share their positive or bad experiences or bring more people forward saying, well, well, I just don’t know, how to react in that environment or what to do." he said. The English cricket director stated that people should be able to speak out against racism and do more about it if they see it "We have to address it more if we see it.Perhaps all of us in past -- and this is not just about cricket -- have let things slide.I dont mean to kick chairs over or start a fight by calling them out.He said that they just made it clear that such behaviours were not appropriate in our dressing rooms, or in our environments.Notably, the England and Wales Cricket Board published a 12-point game-wide plan on Friday to combat racism and other forms of discrimination in the game.
