The suit was filed against Quentin Tarantino by a filmmaker who sold NFTs that were based on Quentin Tarantino’s screenplay for “Pulp Fiction”.
According to variety.com, Tarantino’s lawyer Bryan Freedman stated that “Miramax was wrong.Plain and simple.”

“Quentin Tarantino has a contract that is very clear. He can sell NFTs from his Pulp Fiction script. This will be despite every effort to stop him.

Miramax’s inconsiderate decision to reveal confidential information regarding its filmmakers’ compensation and contracts will undoubtedly tarnish the company’s reputation well after this case has been resolved.

Tarantino made the announcement at a New York crypto-art convention.

It is planned to sell NFT tokens (non-fungible tokens). The auction will be based on portions of Tarantino’s handwritten script, which was accompanied with commentary.

NFT will only be accessible to the owners, so it is referred to as secret.

According to the suit Tarantino didn’t consult Miramax beforehand, but Miramax still retains rights to Tarantino’s classic 1994 film.

Miramax’s lawyers have written a cease-and-desist letter to stop the sale. However, that hasn’t stopped Tarantino or his team moving forward.

Miramax asserts that Tarantino’s actions interfered with studio’s plans to enter market for NFTs in ‘Pulp Fiction.

Bart Williams, Miramax’s attorney, accused Tarantino and his team of “deliberate pre-meditated short-term money grab” in a statement.

Williams stated that the group decided to disregard Quentin’s agreement and instead follow the legal and ethical route of communicating directly with Miramax regarding his ideas.

Miramax plans to increase the value of NFT rights by a one-off effort.

This is a strategy, holistic approach that Miramax will use to achieve its goals.

It appears that the suit will focus on whether NFTs that are based on screenplay excerpts can be considered a publication of the screenplay.

The suit claims that Tarantino’s attorney has informed Miramax of Tarantino’s right to publish his screenplay under the Miramax contract and that Tarantino is now exercising this right via the NFT sale.

Miramax claims that NFTs can only be purchased once and do not replace publication of screenplays.Miramax therefore owns all NFT rights.

This suit asserts claims for breach of contract and trademark infringement.
