Vaishnaw – Equipment procurement for 5G

New Delhi, Dec 8, 2008 : Ashwini Vainshaw, Communications, Electronic and Information Technology Minister, stated Wednesday that equipment procurements for 5G technology were made through trusted sources.
Responding to Manish Tewari’s question in the Lok Sabha about whether Huawei, the Chinese company, was asked to participate in the 5G trial in India and if the Indian government had refused a permit for it to do so, he stated that 5G services are being procured through trusted sources.

He refused to give the name of any company.

Answering another question, the Minister said that infrastructure for 4G network has been in progress in the Aspirational Districts.

These infrastructures have been set up in 7,387 villages, and in comparison to 2014, more than 23,000 towers were installed.The government-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has also been working to expand internet connectivity to more than 17 lakh households.

The house was witness to heated arguments between the opposition and treasury benches when Dayanidhi Maran, a DMK member, asked why government-owned BSNL and MTNL had deteriorated while private network like Jio was promoted.Pralhad Joshi, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, and Vaishnaw, both objected to this and said why the situation deteriorated.Maran knew better.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla intervened to advise all members to ask questions about the policy matters.

The Communications Minister informed the House that both BSNL (MTNL) and MTNL were in the process of being revived.Both companies’ engineers have been working on 4G/5G technology and they will soon release the most affordable and cost-effective technology for both networks.

Vaishnaw responded to some members’ concerns about online gambling and online gaming.He also stated that the Centre has the right to make a law if all states agree to a uniform law banning online betting.

However, the states must first call the Centre.Online games that involve prize money have been banned in four states, namely Tamil Nadu (Telangana), Andhra Pradesh (Andhra Pradesh) and Karnataka.Sikkim and Goa however, have allowed it.

Responding to a question about poor connectivity in remote areas, he said that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is responsible for fixing the base price of spectrum.
