New Delhi : , Nov 23, 2003 – President Ram Nath Kovind presented gallantry awards during the Defence Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan to Armed Forces personnel, which included Galwan Valley heroes and those who faced off against Chinese troops.
Kovind was awarded a Maha Vir Chakra, a Kirti Chakra, five Vir Chakras (posthumous), six Shaurya Chakras (posthumous), and one posthumous Shaurya Chakra for conspicuous gallantry and indomitable bravery.

For distinguished service of extraordinary order, the President conferred two Uttam Judh Seva Medals on Param Vishisht Seva Medals; and one Uttam Yudh Seva Medal on Uttam Yudh Seva Medal.

Posthumously, Mahavir Chakra was awarded to Colonel Santosh Babu.

He made a supreme sacrifice for India’s sovereignty in the fierce battle with Chinese troops at Eastern Ladakh’s Galwan Valley in June 2015.The award was presented to his mother and wife.

Galwan’s other heroes received gallantry awards posthumously.These included Naib Subedar nuram Soren (16 Bihar), Havildar Karani (81 Field), Naikdeepak Singh (16 Bihar), and Sepoy Gurtej Singh (3) Punjab.

Havildar Tejinder Sing (3 Medium) was awarded Vir Chakras for his resistance to the Chinese aggression.

According to the citation, Col Santosh Babu was the 16 Bihar Commanding officer who was stationed in Galwan Valley as part of Operation Snow Leopard.

He was given the task of establishing an observation point in the face the enemy (China).According to the citation, the Colonel successfully executed the plan after having prepared and briefed the soldiers regarding the situation.

The article states further that Col Santosh Babu faced strong resistance when he held the position.He used lethal, sharp and heavy stones to attack the enemy.

The enemy tried to force him back with his Indian troops, but he was unable to resist the aggression of the soldiers.

The Kirti Chakra was also awarded to Subedar Sanjiv, an Indian Army Para Special Forces soldier who led the anti-terrorist operation in Keran Sector of Jammu & Kashmir.

Subedar Sanjiv Kumar was shot and killed as he and his team fought five terrorists that had attempted to infiltrate the Line of Control.
