“Dior, like always, respects sentiments of Chinese people.”If any errors occur, [Dior] must receive feedback and correct them in the time,” the fashion house wrote on Wednesday evening on its Weibo account. It also stated that the work was an art piece and not a commercial advertisement.

The photo was first displayed on November 12th, prompting a backlash by some netizens as well as local media outlets, according to the report.

An editorial published by Beijing Daily compared the Dior photo to the Beijing Daily, which described the model as having “gloomy eyes” and “sinister looks”.

“Asian women have been seen with small eyes and freckles in the Western perspective for years.” According to the editorial, the photographer is playing up the brands or aesthetic tastes of western countries.

Chinese social media users also agreed with this sentiment and claimed Chen’s photos were an “insulting portrayal” of what Westerners believed Chinese women to look like, according to the report.

One user on Weibo said, “This is how Westerners think we look.” He also added that Chen had been up to this. Many others said they would boycott the luxury brand.
